Victor Ortiz vs. Josesito Lopez: Loss Doesn't End Ortiz' Hopes for Major Fight
For Victor Ortiz, last night's defeat and subsequent broken jaw was only a minor setback. With Floyd Mayweather, Jr. leaving prison within the next 90 days and Josesito Lopez taking the top contender spot for the next welterweight title, Ortiz needs to shift gears and take on the Pretty Boy for his next fight.
Ortiz had one of his best fights against Andre Berto when he won the WBC Welterweight title, and it felt like the Mexican boxer had finally earned his right as one of the top boxers in the world. However, he has since lost two fights, one to Mayweather for the WBC title and one to Lopez for the top contender spot. There would only be two obstacles to the fight: Ortiz's broken jaw and Mayweather's prison sentence.
The Broken Jaw
Ortiz will be facing a liquid diet for the foreseeable future because of the broken jaw that he sustained in the fight. According to Dr. F.L. Steinbeck, DDS, the average time for a broken jaw to recover is anywhere from six to eight weeks. By the time Mayweather gets out of jail and his 90-day term is over, Ortiz's jaw should finally be completely healed up.
And once that happens, there is no reason for the camps of Ortiz and Mayweather to not get a rematch set up in either November or December. It would allow both fighters to get completely healed and healthy for a fight that would be more competitive than the first one they had.
The Rematch to Re-establish
Mayweather only took four rounds to take out Ortiz in their earlier fight. This time, it would be different. Both men need to re-establish themselves as top-level contenders, and what better way then fight each other.
The fight would be mutually beneficial for both men, as it would be the first fight for Mayweather since his 12-round battle with Miguel Cotto. It would also allow Ortiz to show that his jaw is completely healthy against the man who is currently considered arguably the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world.
This fight would allow both men to re-establish themselves into the boxing world. A good showing on both sides will rebuild the reputations of both men while still allowing boxing fans a match that will be extremely entertaining to watch.
