Gray Maynard vs. Clay Guida Results: What's Next for Gray Maynard?

Cody GuinnJun 5, 2018

At UFC on FX 4, we saw former title contender Gray Maynard get back on track after failing to win the title from Frankie Edgar. In his most recent bout, Maynard was able to use his aggressive style to counter Clay Guida's game plan of constant movement and picked up the split decision victory.

So, what's next for the former UFC Lightweight Championship No. 1 contender?

Well, there is the option of making him the No. 1 contender for the winner of the rematch between Ben Henderson and Frankie Edgar, but that would cause a slight problem.

There are already two No. 1 lightweight contenders in Nate Diaz and Anthony Pettis. Many are calling for the two to face-off to crown an undisputed champion, but the UFC has not made an official decision on that due to Pettis' recent inactivity as he recuperates from injury.

So, with Maynard now back in the picture, there is a possibility of setting up another matchup between Nate Diaz and Gray Maynard.

Both men have grown so much since their time on season five of The Ultimate Fighter when Diaz defeated Maynard by submission. The two faced off again in 2010, but this time Maynard got the upper hand and defeated Diaz by split decision.

After watching Maynard tonight, it's clear he's made many improvements after his battles with Frankie Edgar. However, it's also clear that Nate Diaz is a much better fighter now than he was in 2010.

With Pettis on the mend, the UFC may decide to give the next title shot to Diaz. If that's so, maybe a matchup between Maynard and Pettis would be the right move to crown the next No. 1 contender after Diaz.

Either way, Maynard deserves to be back in the title picture and I wouldn't be surprised if Maynard received a title shot before the end of the year.
