Wimbledon 2012: Players Who Will Threaten Apparent Djokovic-Nadal Final
The world of tennis has primarily revolved around two men in the last few seasons: Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. But don't believe for a second that they will have an easy road to the 2012 Wimbledon final.
Despite men's tennis becoming centered around these two stars recently, parity still exists in tennis and the quality of talent in tournaments like the Wimbledon is paramount. When arguably the biggest championship in the sport begins June 25, the world will tune in to watch and see if anyone in the field can top the heavy favorites.
So, who has the best chance to topple the giants?
This should be a given.
Roger Federer's decline in recent years has been well documented; he hasn't won a major title since the Australian Open in 2010. And there's nobody more responsible for that than Novak Djokovic.
Federer has many matches of tennis to worry about before he faces Djokovic in a possible semifinal matchup, but you can bet he's already got his sights set on it. Taking down the Serbian who has taken so many championships away is undoubtedly on Federer's to-do list, and there's no bigger stage for him to do so than at the 2012 Wimbledon.
The Scotland native has rarely refused to show up at Wimbledon, and he'll use his home-court advantage once again this year.
Murray has reached the semifinals in each of the last three years, and he wants to use his experience in the recent years to get past the powerful Nadal in the round of four.
He's also enjoyed an amount of success this season, taking Djokovic to a five-set thriller in the Australian Open semifinal. He also defeated Djokovic in straight sets at the Dubai Open.
Could this be his time to finally win a major?
The French native put his name on the map during his French Open match against Djokovic, where he collapsed down the stretch and allowed Djokovic to advance despite multiple match-point opportunities.
Tsonga has been on the cusp of greatness for some time. He's easily in the conversation for second-tier tennis stars along with Murray and Federer, but hasn't been able to execute and pull through in order to win his first major.
He's set up to face Nadal in the quarterfinal, where he could give the Spaniard some trouble. I'm sure he's still bitter about the officiating in his recent loss to Nadal, and will want to seek revenge.
Look for him to be a tough out, if he's an out at all.
