Wimbledon Tennis 2012: Novak Djokovic Will Easily Get Second Straight Title

Rob GoldbergJun 7, 2018

Over the past year, no one in the tennis world has been better than Novak Djokovic. By the end of Wimbledon, he will prove it once again.

Men's tennis is not often filled by underdogs and unpredictable major winners like golf in recent years. Instead, it is usually filled with periods of dominance by one or two top athletes. A few years ago was Roger Federer's time, then it was Rafael Nadal's. This is Djokovic's time in the spotlight.

In the past year and a half, Novak has won two Australian Opens, the 2011 U.S. Open and last year's Wimbledon crown. He became one match away from being the first person since Rod Laver to win all four Grand Slam tournaments consecutively.

Unfortunately, that one match is important in respect to the Djoker's legacy.

Just like almost everyone else in history, the Serbian was unable to defeat Nadal at the French Open. Nadal earned his record seventh-career victory at Roland Garros and proved that he is the best player in the world on clay.

Still, Djokovic came as close as anyone else in recent years. He was able to win the third set before narrowly losing in the fourth to end the championship. Winning even one set is an accomplishment in itself against the "king of clay."

On any other surface, however, Novak has the advantage. The two had competed in the finals of each of the three major tournaments prior to the French Open, and Djokovic has come out on top every time. On clay, Nadal can sit back and wait for his opponent to make mistakes. Everywhere else, he does not have the strength or finesse of the current No. 1 player in the world.

The only other competitor who might pose a challenge for the top spot at Wimbledon is Roger Federer. The 16-time Grand Slam winner was embarrassed by Djokovic at the French Open, but he is best on grass. Federer has won six career titles at Wimbledon.

However, the Swiss icon has not won a major title in over two years. He has the experience to win, but he has lost a step or two over the years and cannot keep up with his younger counterparts.

Also, Djokovic drew the top seed in the upcoming tournament, meaning Federer and Nadal would likely face each other first.

When the importance of the tournament picks up, so does the play of Novak Djokovic. He is the best player in the world, and there is no one that can deny him winning his second straight Wimbledon title.
