Roger Federer: Wimbledon Will Be Last Chance to Prove He Can Still Win
Roger Federer is one of the greatest tennis players of all time, but this year's Wimbledon might be his last opportunity to show he is not done.
Few have been better in the history of the prestigious tournament in England than Federer. Only Pete Sampras and 19th century player William Renshaw have ever won more than Federer's six wins in the final.
Unfortunately, there comes a time in every athlete's life where he can no longer be as successful as he once was. It seems that time is now for the 16-time Grand Slam champion.
The Swiss athlete was expected to win every tournament he participated in a few years ago, but he has not won a major tournament in over two years. He was the most dominant player in the world until Rafael Nadal started to take over. Now, it seems Novak Djokovic has a hold on that title.
In the French Open, Federer was embarrassed by Djokovic, the No. 1 player in the world, losing in the semifinals in straight sets. The 30-year-old looked slow and he did not have enough strength on his backhand to keep up with his opponent.
Fortunately, he still has a chance at redemption. Federer knows the grass at Wimbledon better than anyone in the world, and his aggressive style might allow him to defeat the players that seem to have passed him by.
Things do not look bright for the veteran. He recently lost to Tommy Haas in a final in Halle, Germany. The fact that he lost is not as bad as the fact that the tournament took place on grass. If he cannot win on grass, does he have a chance anywhere else?
Federer will look to answer that question over the next month. His legacy will remain unchanged, but this will be his chance to show the world that he still has the ability necessary to win a championship.
Otherwise, it might be time for the man with the most Grand Slam titles of all time to hang it up.
