WWE No Way out 2012: John Laurinaitis Firing Gives WWE Fresh Start

Adam WellsJun 7, 2018

One of the great things about wrestling is how every month is a chance to start over. WWE had an opportunity to get rid of one of its biggest problems at No Way Out on Sunday, and it took advantage of the situation.

John Laurinaitis was designed to be a character that people hated, but he did so in a way that no one actually wanted to see on television.

There are good heels and bad heels in wrestling. A good heel makes you hate him with the things he/she says—like how awesome they are, or how much the audience stinks—but you are fascinated by them because they have that presence in the ring.

Think of someone like Chris Jericho during his run in 2008.

A bad heel is so easy to boo because the script says you are supposed to root against them, yet they are so bad in delivering lines, have no charisma or presence, and they just come off as annoying. This is where Laurinaitis fits in. He has what's known as channel-change heat.

Yet WWE was able to exorcise the Laurinaitis demon at No Way Out, when John Cena gave him an Attitude Adjustment through an announcer's table after after Vince McMahon fired him. It felt like a moment where WWE could hit the reset button on so many things that had gone wrong with Laurinaitis as general manager.

We saw on Raw that WWE apparently plans on using a special guest general manager until it can figure out what to do with the position. While I am in favor of getting rid of it altogether, if WWE feels like it has to continue with the concept, make it worth everyone's while.

Instead of McMahon using someone who makes him laugh, make sure the person has a strong presence and commands the audience's attention. Laurinaitis never had that. Everyone was laughing at him as he botched line after line.

Wrestling fans are a forgiving lot. They keep coming back, no matter how many times they have been slapped around by the decision-makers, so why not reward their faith by giving them someone worth watching every week?

It doesn't matter who WWE picks, just make sure it is someone who the people actually care about seeing.
