England vs Ukraine: Balanced Attack Will Lead Three Lions to Euro Quarterfinals

Austin GreenJun 5, 2018

The tournament co-hosts Ukraine have been a nice story at Euro 2012, but their run will come to an end today against Wayne Rooney and England.

Despite being depleted at nearly every position, the Three Lions are currently tied for first place in Group D with four points. They played France to an ugly, yet effective draw, then opened the floodgates against Sweden, scoring three goals in the thrilling battle.

Now, Rooney is returning from suspension and their attack will be much more dangerous.

Even without the man who scored 27 goals in the English Premier League this season, Roy Hodgson's side was able to find the net early in the tournament. Four different players have scored for England so far, including Danny Welbeck, who propelled the Three Lions to victory with this nasty backheel goal.

While Welbeck's goal was amazing, it was all set up by Theo Walcott, who has been one of the most unexpectedly brilliant players in this tournament. Walcott single-handedly turned the tide against Sweden, scoring just three minutes after he was inserted. Then, he served up the deciding cross on a platter and let Welbeck do the rest.

With Rooney returning, expect England's offensive success to continue. The man is an absolute menace with the ball at his feet, and even if he doesn't do anything too special, his presence alone will free up the likes of Welbeck, Walcott, Andy Carroll and the surprisingly quiet Ashley Young.

Although Ukraine has played well thus far, they've been prone to defensive lapses. They gave up two goals in a four-minute span against France, and with the English attack in full force, I'm expecting more struggles from their back line today.

It won't be easy, but if they play up to their potential, Rooney, Walcott and the rest of the English side will move on to the quarterfinals.
