Who Replaces The Fab Five: Sachin, Dravid, Ganguly, Kumble, and Laxman

Dann KhanFeb 10, 2009

In an age where cricket is modernising and many of the legends are past their prime, it is important to see what follows.

There have been many articles about this topic. Here is another one.

Let us look at who can can replace whom in the Indian test team, as the ODI team has already gone through plenty of changes.

Sachin Tendulkar

The man who is playing his 20th year of international cricket. He has given you all that you can wish for. I doubt if we will ever have another Sachin but we still have to find a suitable replacement for him.

Suresh Raina is one player who I think comes closest to Sachin's Test spot. He has got talent and a lot of aggression. He is also rated very highly by not only the selectors but also the ICC, who selected him as one of the future legends of the game at a time when he was out of the Indian team.

Rohit Sharma is another one. He is technically correct and has got a very steady head on his shoulders. He is currently going through a bad patch but if he finds some consistency I am pretty sure he will come into the Test side before Raina.

Rahul Dravid

The crumbling wall of Indian cricket. He is definitely a player who will be out soon. But I really doubt if anyone will be able to do what he did.

Players can definitely try to be aggressive like Tendulkar or Ganguly but I doubt whether anyone can stick around for as long as he can at the crease and still get less than a batsmen who came after you. I am not mocking him, it is a rare skill. Players these days cannot concentrate the way he can.

India can only have a different kind of No.3 in the line up. He cannot be replaced.

Sourav Ganguly

Dada's captaincy can only be matched by MS Dhoni but his batting is something that requires a lot of elegance.

Suresh Raina can also take this man's place. He is indeed very elegant and also stylish. He just has to improve his shot selection and he can be the Test line-up's No. 5.

Yuvraj Singh is someone who has currently replaced Ganguly. He is also maturing, so maybe we already have the future Dada.

Manoj Tiwary is another one. He has already been nicknamed "Chotu Dada". He has played only one ODI and didn't impress. But there is no doubt about his talent.

Anil Kumble

No one has the discipline this man had. No one will ever bowl leg spin the way he could. India may never again have such a leg spinner.

Piyush Chawla and Amit Mishra are supposed to be the future Kumbles but neither of them have the intelligence Jumbo had.

But if someone has to replace him it has to be Chawla. Because he is young and very talented and most importantly has a big heart which is required very much.

V.V.S Laxman

He is the only player who always plays in the nets. At least that's how it seems. But the problem is no one wants to be Laxman. So there is no on capable enough of being him.

Players like him are often the unsung heroes. Who knows what would have happened if he would have batted higher up the order.

The only player who I think is capable of doing something similar to what he does is Mohammad Kaif. He is churning out runs at the domestic level and and can show similar consistency to V.V.S.
