David Beckham Must Stay in Milan

Rayed MamunFeb 10, 2009

Well, what a start it has been to Beckham’s loan spell in Milan! He’s already scored two goals, and captured the imagination of the Milan faithful. It seems that the bigger leagues in Europe have brought the best out of Beckham, and now he is torn between making his "dream" move to Milan and honouring his contract with Los Angeles Galaxy.

To me the decision is easy—staying in Milan is the only way for Beckham.

For his own sake, returning to the MLS would be suicidal for his national team credentials. The whole point of this move was that he be match fit during this time so that he would be eligible to be selected for England. Indeed, even during the MLS season it was a logistical nightmare for Beckham to cross the Atlantic for qualifiers and friendlies and was a far from ideal situation.

Despite what many say, the MLS will be just fine without Beckham. Everybody predicted a huge impact in America, but looking at the bigger picture, Beckham’s influence has been minimal. Many in Los Angeles still find the term "Galaxy" to be foreign when compared to "The Lakers" or "The Dodgers".

Despite his age, Beckham is still amongst the favourites of England coach Capello, so much so that he came to watch the right midfielder in action at the San Siro recently.

Not only have his two goals from four games grabbed the headlines, but AC Milan have actually moulded their team around him! Ronaldinho, the normal right midfielder, is now on the bench!

The Galaxy haven’t set the world alight since Beckham’s arrival, in fact, they haven’t even made the playoffs. It doesn’t help anyone when average players are playing the same team as one world-lass player (albeit a worldclass player past his prime, but as they say, class is permanent).

Beckham isn’t getting the quality of football that he is used to, and vice versa. During these tough financial times, it seems that the Galaxy haven’t exactly caused a stir about the chance of Beckham leaving. Deep down they probably think they need the money that AC Milan is offering, more than the ineffective marketing Beckham has provided for the MLS.

I really see no other solution to this problem. It is a no-brainer. Beckham moving permanently to Milan is the most logical move that benefits everyone.
