Italy vs. Ireland Live Stream: Online Viewing Info for Euro 2012 Match

Jessica MarieJun 7, 2018

Italy needs results and a lot of luck to go its way on Monday in order to advance to the quarterfinals at Euro 2012.

Regardless of the result in the Spain-Croatia matchup, Italy have to be victorious. If there is a winner in Group C's other game, then a victory for the Italians would see them through.

However, should Spain and Croatia draw by a score of 2-2 or higher, then Italy will find themselves on the plane home irrespective of how many goals they put away against the Irish.

Should the Spanish and Croations draw 1-1, however, then Italy must beat the Republic of Ireland by three clear goals to progress.

Italy has escaped from its first two games against Spain and Croatia with 1-1 draws—not awful, but obviously not good enough when the two teams above it in the standings have managed to garner wins.

If Italy manages a win on Monday and Spain and Croatia play to a draw, all three teams will tie at five points each, and the difference between moving on and packing up will come down to goal differential.

Ireland, meanwhile, has zero points thus far and has allowed seven goals while scoring one. The Irish are headed home regardless of what happens on Monday, but Italy needs to do some more damage to Ireland's goals against mark in order to add some fuel to its hopes of advancing.

Betting Odds: Italy favored 17-1 (via Bet365)

Looking to get their first win, the Italians couldn't be in a better situation, facing a team that has only managed to score once in its first two games while allowing seven goals. Barring disaster, Italy—which entered the tournament with 14-1 odds of winning—should have this one in the bag.

Player to Watch for Italy: Andrea Barzagli

After missing the first two games of Euro 2012 with a thigh injury, the Italians will likely get a big boost from the return of Barzagli.

The defender made headlines last week when he assured the media that Italy would be able to score the three goals necessary in order to advance to the quarterfinals. He told Uefa.com

"

We have the potential to score three goals as we have great forwards. They can play well and get a feel for the goal. When you don't score or when you're losing, it's a problem the whole team has to try and deal with. We have to help [the strikers], we have to create chances and get the ball near the goal. The rest of the team will have to help a lot.

"

Player to Watch for Ireland: Robbie Keane

The Irish don't have a lot to play for aside from spoiling Italy's chances, which is exactly what Keane—Ireland's leading scorer—must motivate his teammates to do. He might have some extra motivation to end this match on a good note, given the rumors surrounding his possible retirement—though he's denied all of those.

Keane told the UK Press Association:

"

We are not going into this game for one second thinking that we are going to let Italy walk all over us, there is no question about that. We will go into that game on Monday hoping to go back to Ireland with three points.

"

Prediction: Italy wins 3-0

The Italians will come alive when they need to most and will get the three goals they need to give them the best chance of qualification against an Ireland team that has looked totally beatable throughout its short Euro 2012 journey. The question is, will the Spain-Croatia outcome make the quarterfinals possible?
