US Open Golf TV Coverage 2012: Latest TV Info for Final Round
While past U.S. Open champions Graeme McDowell, Jim Furyk and Ernie Els positioned themselves nicely for Sunday's final round in round three at Olympic Club, three-time U.S. Open champion Tiger Woods faded from the lead and now has his work cut out for him on Father's Day.
Still just five strokes back, Tiger has to be considered a contender heading into the final 18 holes. Woods bogeyed six holes on Saturday, shooting a 5-over 75 to go from the lead to being tied for 14th.
Tiger looked to be riding the momentum of his impressive win at the Memorial two weeks ago in Ohio, in which he shot 5-under in the final round, until Saturday when he came unglued on the brutal San Francisco course that has produced poor scores for some of the game's best round after round.
Tiger, or the Field?
With just one round of golf left at the 2012 U.S. Open, the question must be asked: Who do you like, Tiger, or the field? Woods currently sits five strokes back of leaders Graeme McDowell (2010 U.S. Open champion) and Jim Furyk (2003 U.S. Open champion), who are both 1-under through three rounds.
Given the brutal play of the course so far, one would have to expect the leaders to struggle in the final round as the pressures of winning a major tournament begin to come into play, building on every mistake. That could potentially open the door for Tiger, who will tee off before the leaders with much less anticipation behind every shot.
If Tiger can shoot under par like he did on Thursday and get some help from the leaders late, he could easily find himself in a playoff for his fourth career U.S. Open victory. Five strokes at Olympic Club this weekend is hardly a comfortable margin. Although the field looks to be positioned nicely, I like Tiger to roar back on Sunday, much like he did two weeks ago in Dublin.
