Manchester United Transfer News: Is Gylfi Sigurdsson Set for United or Anfield?
Gylfi Sigurdsson could be the latest player set to move to Old Trafford over the summer transfer window, with the midfielder likely to choose between Manchester United and Liverpool as to his landing spot for next season.
Sigurdsson, who is currently on loan at Swansea City from Hoffenheim, originally looked to be making his move to Liberty Stadium a more permanent fixture, with then manager Brendan Rodgers eager to sign the 22-year-old. Rodgers, however, would move on at the end of the season to coach Liverpool with the plan to lure Sigurdsson across to Anfield over the summer transfer window—as reported by Sky Sports.

Not wanting to start off his managerial career at Liverpool on a distasteful note with his former club, Rodgers then reportedly agreed not to hijack any deal that Sigurdsson had with Swansea, meaning that if the midfielder was under contract, Rodgers would not pursue him any further. Not unless he was available, that is.
Having said that, Liverpool are now reportedly not the only club interested in the midfielder, with several clubs set to be interested in the 22-year-old—clubs like Manchester United, who are rumored to be keeping an eye on the situation with Liverpool.
United have already added Shinji Kagawa from Borussia Dortmund and Nick Powell from Crewe Alexandra to their midfield for next season, with the potential addition of Sigurdsson furthering strengthening their squad.
Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick aren't getting any younger, and with the likes of Park Ji-Sung, Bebe, Dimitar Berbatov and Anderson all available to be used in an offer, the Red Devils could potentially lure the midfielder away from Anfield.
Liverpool would provide Sigurdsson a reunion with his former manager, and the chance to learn from experienced midfielders such as Steven Gerrard. Manchester United, however, would provide him with the same experience on hand, the most experienced manager in the Premier League and the opportunity to play in the highest tournaments in the world.
Like the UEFA Champions League—something that Liverpool cannot offer.
If the summer transfer window has shown us anything so far, it's the incredible power and luxury that comes with Champions League qualification. Eden Hazard, Harry Redknapp, Nick Powell, Luka Modric—all cases where the prospect of Champions League football could, and it some cases has, outweighed other offers available.
Sigurdsson isn't likely to come to a deal any time soon with Swansea, Liverpool or Manchester United. But with the experience available and Old Trafford calling, the Red Devils may well snub the midfielder away from Anfield.
