USA vs. Sweden: Convincing Victory by Americans Will Lead to Win vs. Japan

Ben ChodosJun 7, 2018

The United States women’s national team left no doubt as to which was the better side in its 3-1 victory against Sweden, and the team will continue its success against Japan.

The games are part of three-team tournament in Sweden called the Volvo Winners Cup. It serves as a tune-up for the Olympics, and the United States will face Japan next on June 18.

Against the Swedes, the Americans posted a wire-to-wire victory that proved they are worthy of the top rank in the world

Star striker Abby Wambach opened up the scoring in just the eighth minute with a left-footed screamer from at least 35 yards away from goal.

It did not take long for Alex Morgan to double the lead as she notched the Americans' second goal in the 22nd minute.

Sweden’s Lotta Schelin grabbed a goal back for her side, but Tobin Heath’s second-half strike sealed the victory for the United States.

Now, the United States turns its focus to Japan, its opponent in the final match of the 2011 World Cup.

The Americans led twice in finals, but allowed the Japanese to tie the game both times and force a penalty shootout. Several US players struck their spot kicks poorly, and the Japanese completed a shocking upset for its first World Cup victory.

Now, heading into the Olympics, the US and Japan will be the center of attention.

The Americans proved conclusively against Sweden that they have not taken a step back and are still a dominant team.

The Japanese victory at the World Cup had more to do with will and desire than skill. The team put on inspired performance, and while they looked to be the weaker side at times, they pulled out goals in crucial moments. At the end of 90 minutes, the stronger team is not always the victor.

The United States is better than Japan and their power was on full display against Sweden. In the match at the Volvo Winners Cup, emotions will not be running as high as they were in the World Cup.

This match will come down to skill and talent, and in those areas, the United States has a clear advantage.
