US Open Golf Scores 2012: Leaders Sure to Remain Tight as Weekend Action Begins

Patrick ClarkeJun 16, 2012

Life at the top of the leaderboard is sure to be crowded this weekend at the 2012 U.S. Open from the Olympic Club in San Francisco.

The course has proved extremely difficult to play over the past two days, evidenced by 2012 Masters champion Bubba Watson's implosion, as well as the collapse of defending U.S. Open champ Rory McIlroy. Both golfers missed the cut on Friday after shooting +9 and +10 through the first 36 holes respectively.

Three-time U.S. Open champion and 14-time major winner Tiger Woods (-1) heads a trio that currently leads heading into round three. 2003 U.S. Open champion Jim Furyk and 2001 PGA Championship winner David Toms are also one under after two rounds.

Even more incredible, four players are tied for fourth place at one-over, while nine players are currently tied for ninth at three-over. In all, 17 players are separated by just four strokes heading into the weekend's action.

Saturday may produce a shakeup at the top of the leaderboard, but it's hard to imagine anyone, even the scorching-hot Woods extending a comfortable lead heading into Sunday's final round of play.

McIlroy won the tournament by eight strokes last year at Congressional in Bethesda, Maryland, a margin of victory that seems not only unlikely, but impossible this time around in 2012.

The course has swallowed up some of the game's top golfers, including Phil Mickelson, who has finished second or tied for second on five occasions at the U.S. Open. Mickelson (+7) is tied for 51st heading into the third round.

The logjam at the top will only continue on Saturday, as Tiger and the leaders attempt to create any sort of space at all on the leaderboard so they may enter the final 18 with a bit of breathing room.
