Nicholas GossJun 7, 2018

Rory McIlroy headlined the most disappointing star performances on Friday during second-round play at the U.S. Open.

McIlroy wasn't the only star golfer who struggled to find success in San Francisco. The leaderboard is full of talented players who under-performed at this year's U.S. Open.

Let's look at the most disappointing stars of Round 2.

Luke Donald

Luke Donald is one of the best players on the PGA Tour, but he is expected to miss the cut at the U.S. Open after a terrible first round made it nearly impossible for him to climb up the leaderboard.

Donald shot a 79 on Thursday, and he could only shoot a 72 on Friday to finish 11-over par for the tournament.

He was thought of as a top contender to be at least be in contention during Sunday's final round, but Donald will instead have to watch the weekend rounds at home.

Angel Cabrera

The former Masters champion shot a 72 on Thursday and followed that up with an even worse round of golf on Friday by shooting a 76.

He finished the second round at eight-over par for the tournament, and will likely miss the projected cut of five-over par.

The Argentinian is a very talented golfer, but he was just awful at the Olympic Club. Cabrera bogeyed the first two holes on Friday and bogeyed or double-bogeyed four of his first nine holes.

Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy finished 10-over par for the tournament thanks to a second-round 73 to miss the cut at the U.S. Open. He didn't putt well or drive well off the tee. His game needs a lot of work, and unless he dedicates himself to improving, he won't ever get back to an elite level again.
