Australia Wins the Fourth ODI Against New Zealand

Dann KhanFeb 10, 2009

New Zealand are now facing the possibility of a series defeat after being 2-0 up. Australia have come out of nowhere and won the previous two ODI's of the series. It is the Aussies who are calling the shots now.

It was clear from the very start that the Black Caps were worried. After they lost the third ODI, I suspected this could happen. They made a slow start while batting and lost wickets the moment they started to accelerate.

Once they were on the back foot it was again up to Taylor to hold the innings together. In the end they came back well to post 244. There was a stage when it seemed they would only manage two hundred.

Their bowling also started well. They got Michael Clarke and Ricky Ponting early but after that Brad Haddin and Dave Hussey got a few runs together.

When Haddin got run out, it seemed like the Kiwis would pull this one off and take the series. But then Mike Hussey came and guided his brother and stitched up a beautiful partnership.

These two also set the tone for the Pathan brothers from India as they also won their team a match together.

Dave Hussey played himself back into form and got the Man of The Match for his career best score. The only thing he would be disappointed is that he did not get a ton.

Michael Hussey of course is back to being Mr. Consistent. He has scored four fifties in his last five innings and the only score below the half century innings was a 49.

I think what Australia have done right in the last two matches is attacking Vettori. I often feel that Dan Vettori is the whole of the New Zealand team. When he does not perform, his teammates give him company in that department. Iain O'Brien bowled well along with Kyle Mills but they did not get wickets.

Vettori is also a decent captain. But if captains do not perform then it does affect their decision making.

As far as I can see, the Kiwis are on their way to conceding the trophy to Australia. Ponting's men are gaining self-belief and are back on form.
