College Football: 2013 Weekly Recruiting Roundup June 7-14
It is Thursday and that is where we knock out the Weekly Recruiting Roundup for you all here at Your Best 11. We'll kick things off in the Big Ten today as Penn State continues to keep things moving. Quietly Bill O'Brien and the Nittany Lions are building a solid class as they add linebacker Brandon Bell to this mix of commitments this week. Also in the Big Ten, Nebraska adds Kevin Gladney, a wide receiver, to their class as Pelini is trying to run down the likes of Michigan and Ohio State.
The Sooners old rivals, Texas and Oklahoma also picked up recruits this week. Texas put a JUCO tight end, Geoff Swaim, in the mix to get some early contribution from the position; while Oklahoma added an in-state talent, wide receiver Jordan Smallwood to their commit list.
From the Big 12 to the Pac-12 we go with the roundup folks as we've got some very interesting news to bring you. UCLA adds a linebacker in Cameron Judge to their list and crosstown rival, USC, adds big time wide receiver Steven Mitchell to their already stellar class.
However, the big news out of the lands out west comes from Pullman, Washington. Mike Leach has finally made the big pull that folks were hoping for; quarterback Tyler Bruggman committed to the Cougars. Bruggman is a talented quarterback who Todd Graham at Arizona State was high on leading his attack. This is a big splash for Washington State and definitely shows that the addition of Leach is making kids listen.
Going from the west coast to the east coast, we head down to South Beach where Al Golden is trying to rebuild the Miami. The Hurricanes secured a commitment from a Tampa tight end, Jeremy Kerr. Also in the ACC, the Clemson Tigers got a commitment from Loganville, Georgia defensive back David Kamara. Kamara is teammates with current Clemson commit Wayne Gallman and both are teammates with Clemson's premier target, Robert Nkemdiche.
The Pickens County Tigers are not the only schools vying for Nkemdiche's services; several schools in the SEC are making eyes at him too. While everyone waits for Nkemdiche's decisions, they are out grabbing commitments as well. Georgia added Naim Mustafaa, a linebacker to their robust class. South Carolina, another SEC East school with a big class, added two to their mix. Alan Knott a lineman from Georgia, wanted to play in the SEC and Steve Spurrier is giving him that chance. Also at USC, JP Vonashek, another Peach State lineman, visited Columbia and fell in love, pledging to join South Carolina's class.
In the SEC West things are getting hot and heavy too. Arkansas picks up two commitments as Khari Harding, a safety, and wide receiver Jervenski Johnson both committed to the Hogs. LSU and Texas A&M would not be left out of the mix as they both added one commitment this week. Anthony Jennings, the son of a former Georgia player, committed to LSU; while Reggie Chevis, a linebacker, committed to Kevin Sumlin's squad.
To wrap up, we've got the two biggest movers in the nation this week. Auburn picked up three commitments while Alabama is still on a tear as they grabbed four pledges this week. Auburn got Tashawn Bower, a defensive end from New Jersey, to commit as well as Lemond Johnson, a defensive back from Florida. The Tigers also saw Dee Liner, a defensive end, reaffirm his commitment to the Tigers after a little flirtation with Alabama.
While Bama has not been able to sway Liner, they did have a successful week. Bradley Bozeman, an offensive lineman, was one of the big boys the Tide got to commit this week. JUCO transfer Leon Brown, was the other lineman Nick Saban and staff added to the mix to keep building offensive line depth for the future. Also in the boat this week, quarterback Parker McLeod from Georgia and a Texas defensive back, Maurice Smith.
Teams are speeding through camp season as they get kids on campus to see them work out and interact with coaches. A lot of commitments to come as the second rounds of camps fire up but remember, we're still a long way from February.
