Derrick Henry Decommits from Georgia: What Loss of 5-Star RB Means for Bulldogs

Barrett SalleeJun 13, 2012

Derrick Henry was the headliner of Georgia's 2013 recruiting class. The 5-star running back had been committed to the Bulldogs since last summer.

On Wednesday, they broke up.

The nation's No. 15 overall prospect officially opened his recruitment back up via a statement, courtesy of Dawgs247.com:

"

For me personally, this is one of the biggest decisions I’ll make in my life and probably the most important to this point. I want to be 100 percent sure I am making the best choice on where I go to college and to play football. I’m going to open up my recruitment and take some more visits, get as much information as I can, and then decide from there.

I was probably a little too quick in making my initial decision and got caught up in the moment so I apologize for that. I’m still considering Georgia and I have nothing but great things to say about their program, but I want to be honest with everyone in the fact that I am going to go over all my options and do what is best for me and my athletic and academic career.

He didn't officially close the door, but this is still bad news if you're a Bulldog fan.

The news of Henry's decommitment comes only days after Henry made a visit to Tuscaloosa and posted a picture of himself on Twitter wearing an Alabama jersey.

Speculation remains rampant that Alabama would switch Henry to the defensive side of the football, but according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, he was told that he could play running back at Alabama.

So where does this leave Georgia?

Expect the Bulldogs to crank up the pressure on Norcross, Ga., running back Alvin Kamara.

Kamara is a 5'10", 195-pounder who is ranked as the nation's No. 1 all-purpose back, according to 247Sports.com. Georgia is battling Alabama and Oregon (amongst others) for Kamara's services, so the recruiting rivalry between the Bulldogs and the Crimson Tide might be just heating up.

The door isn't closed on Henry at Georgia, but if Mark Richt and Co. didn't have a backup plan before, now's probably a good time to develop one.
