Tiger Woods: Holes Tiger Must Own to Have Success at US Open

Brian MaziqueJun 14, 2012

There are three holes that will be key to Tiger Woods' success at the US Open. The Olympic in San Francisco is a challenging course that can render very unpredictable results.

If Tiger is to play true to his favorite status, these are the holes where he must differentiate himself.

No. 1, Par 4, 520 yards

This is a converted par-5 that is now a ridiculously long and difficult par-4. It is going to take a very accurate tee-shot (something Tiger has been iffy with this year, he’s only 22nd on the tour in driving accuracy), and the second shot will have to negotiate the treacherous bunkers that flank the green.

Being the first hole, it will set the tone for the day. If Tiger can get his confidence up early, it will help him play comfortably throughout the day.

Many will struggle on this hole, but the players that can conquer it will have a quick leg up.

No. 3, Par 4, 438 yards

This is a very tricky hole, and it could be harder on long hitters like Tiger. He’ll likely need to play it safe off the tee to be in better placement on the slanted fairway.

If Woods doesn’t go bogey on this hole, he’s done well for himself. If he manages a birdie he has made a statement.

No. 16, Par 5, 670 yards

This is a mammoth hole. It’s the longest in US Open history, and easily the most difficult on the course. This is the hole that will allow a contender to catch a player with a two-stroke lead, or the one that will separate a leader from the pack.

If Tiger plays this hole even, or scores two birdies in his four opportunities, it’ll be huge for his chances to win the US Open.
