Free Agency Preview: Running Backs

Bryan BrackneyFeb 9, 2009

Top available unrestricted free agent running backs

  1. Brandon Jacobs: Great power back, should resign with the Giants, if not will get a rich deal in free agency.
  2. Derrick Ward: Will probably leave and get huge deal unless Jacobs is not resigned
  3. Darren Sproles: Will test market, will have to get a job as a third down back who kick returns. Should get 40 percent of a team's carries.
  4. Cedric Benson: Has a lot of hot and cold streaks, but right now he is on a hot streak. It would be wise if the Bengals put a honest effort into resigning him.
  5. Maurice Morris: Very good back up. Could play in a shared backfield. Has had trouble holding onto the ball. Value has droped, but hey; buy low, sell high
  6. Tatum Bell: Just when you think he is washed up he has an amazing game against te Chargers. Will not resign. A great pick up for a team.
  7. Dominic Rhodes: The Colts would love to resign him. Rhodes might not want that. He left the Colts for a larger contract before.
  8. LaMont Jordan: Great goalline back, great receiver, great runner. Quality player if used correctly.
  9. Michael Pittman: I can see him returning to the Cardinals. Has two years left in his career. Good season.
  10. J.J. Arrington: Great season boost's him up almost seven spots in my list. Quality third down back.
  11. Correll Buckhalter: Down year, after playing great last year.
  12. Jesse Chatman: This might be too high. Chatman has great skills, but is injury prone, and was caught using steroids last season.
  13. Aaron Stecker: Stecker is an underused, great player with a great work ethic. Could resign if McAllister is cut.
  14. Jason Wright: Wright was a non factor this season, you have to think he is now past his prime. Will not be resigned
  15. Kevin Jones: Needs to be more consistent. Hard to grade him. Sometimes looks great. Sometimes looks awful.
  16. DeShaun Foster: Not a starter, will always be average, the Dolphins could look at him, reuniting with Dan Henning.
  17. Rudi Johnson: Will get chance, but it will be hard for him. Bad durability, bad average, Johnson is a goalline back now.
  18. Chris Perry: This is too low, some team will pay him a lot of money, and he will not do well. Bad runner, good third down back.
  19. Travis Minor: bad player, been in the league for a while, but could find his way out. Followed Scott Linehan to St. Louis from Miami. Linehan is in Detroit, will he come too?
  20. Aveion Cason: Will have trouble staying in the league, but if he impresses the Lions, he will get a role, if not he is on his way out of the NFL. Subscribing to the UFL newsletter.
  21. Alvin Pearman: will have trouble finding a team who is interested in him. Quality third running back, if a player gets hurt in camp.
