James "Colossus" Thompson Defends Himself on Titans Fighting Fiasco

Gary WhittakerFeb 9, 2009

Great job by The Fight Network in getting James Thompson's point of view on what happened Friday night at Studio Mel's in Montreal. The crowed erupted in anger, and threw bottles, cans, and whatever else they could get their hands on, when Yves Lavigne failed to stop Bossé and Thompson from fighting on the ground, a rule that was prohibited in Titans Fighting. However, most, if not all the fans attendance where unaware that the referee's could not enforce the new rules, as it had not yet been accepted by the Quebec athletic commission.

"

“Patry was trying to be sneaky,” said Thompson, whose main event against former hockey enforcer Steve Bosse was ruled a no contest. “There was no clarity on the rules.”

“If there was a gentleman’s agreement made or something of that nature, it would be a different story,” said Thompson.

“Once [Bosse] went for a guillotine, that’s when I did what I needed to do to win the fight,” said Thompson. “I can’t second guess myself and wait to see how my opponent reacts. I just followed the rules as they were told to me.”

“I was not about to let another Kimbo situation happen where the promoter is siding with my opponent,” said Colossus.

Yves Lavigne was quoted on record as saying that he clearly explained the rules, and the situation with the commission prior to the fight, and that James Thompson was fully aware. In defense of Thompson, Bossé did not immediately let go of his guillotine chokehold, and when he did, it was to transition into a triangle choke, it could be argued that Thompson was not completely in the wrong.

Ultimately, I can only hope that the fans in attendance remembered the great performances of every other fighter on that card, and will be around for the second event that is tentatively scheduled for March.
