Georgia Football: Analyzing How Vital the Bulldogs' Newest Recruits Are

Brian JonesJun 12, 2012

The Georgia Bulldogs have six starters returning on offense and nine returning on defense. Based on what they did last year, they have a very good chance to exceed expectations.

However, it was important for the Bulldogs to have a solid recruiting class because some of the players they signed will have to contribute right away.

It's not only the players who have to play right away that will play an importance to the team this season. The players who won't see playing time this year will have to be ready to go next season.

Georgia will lose a lot of players due to graduation and the NFL.

Here's a closer look how important the new Bulldogs are to the program.

Keith Marshall Has to Be as Good as Advertised

1 of 5

In order for the Bulldogs to have success on offense, the running game has to be more consistent.

Isaiah Crowell has to be better than last year, but all eyes will be on Keith Marshall. He comes to the program with high expectations.

Marshall has elite speed and has the ability to make a big run at any given point in a game. He had a great spring session, so he should find his way in the lineup when September 1 rolls around.

He does not have to rush for 1,000 yards, but he has to be the home run hitter the Bulldogs need in order to win the SEC.

John Theus Is the Key to the Offensive Line's Success

2 of 5

The offensive line has been a issue for the Bulldogs the last two years. Addressing that issue was the No. 1 goal for  the Bulldogs during recruiting.

That's why signing John Theus is huge for the Bulldogs.

He has not set foot on a practice field yet, but he could start at tackle when summer camp is all said and done.

Theus is the highest recruited offensive lineman for the Bulldogs in a very long time. He looks like the real deal, but he'll have to play like it to earn the respect of his players and fans.

Josh Harvey-Clemons Has to Learn from Jarvis Jones

3 of 5

Josh Harvey-Clemons will play the same position as Jarvis Jones because he will play more of a hybrid role once he sees the field.

But Harvey-Clemons is expected to have an impact like Jones had last year. It makes sense for Harvey-Clemons to take advice from Jones.

Both players were highly recruited coming out of high school, and both have the ability to change the game with one play. Jones has proven he can do that in big moments.

If he can guide Harvey-Clemons in the early stages of the season, then it will be Harvey-Clemons who will be the impact player on defense by 2013.

Colin Barber and Marshall Morgan Will Make Special Teams Special

4 of 5

Probably the two most important signings for Georgia are Colin Barber and Marshall Morgan. With Drew Butler and Blair Walsh, gone the Bulldogs need two specialists that can have the same, if not better, impact.

The special teams struggled last year. Part of the reason for that is that Walsh and Butler did not perform at a high level consistently.

Morgan and Barber have the ability to right the ship for the special teams, which is needed. If they don't and the special teams continue to struggle, it will be a long season for the Bulldogs.

The Rest of the Recruits

5 of 5

The rest of the recruits may not have an impact this season, but they will be called upon next year and the year after that.

Jordan Jenkins and Todd Gurley are the first two players that come to mind.

Jenkins is slated to be a big-time defensive end. Gurley will bolster the running game when Richard Samuel is gone.

Mark Beard adds needed depth at offensive line, and Faton Bauta could be a very good SEC quarterback with the right coaching.

As far as athletes go, Sheldon Dawson can play wide receiver, running back and quarterback. Blake Tibbs is an impact player at wide receiver and return specialist.
