Pacquiao vs. Bradley: Judges Review Won't Halt Public Outcry

Tim DanielsJun 12, 2012

The Nevada State Athletic Commission is implementing damage control after a controversial decision gave Timothy Bradley a victory over Manny Pacquiao. Unfortunately, having the judges who scored the bout review tape won't be enough to halt public outcry.

Lem Satterfield of RingTV.com reports that NSAC executive director Keith Kizer will go through the fight with each judge individually to see why they scored the rounds how they did. Judges C.J. Ross and Duane Ford scored it for Bradley, while judge Jerry Roth scored it for Pacquiao. Kizer explained:

"

I want them to review it with me for my own edification. So I'm going to have them come in individually and we will watch it. I expect these judges will show that they used correct scoring criteria and can verbalize their decision-making, as they have be able to do in the past.

While it's a necessary move to help the commission regain trust, the results of the review aren't going to satisfy the majority of fans who witnessed the fight and believe Pacquiao was robbed.

Try as the NSAC might, most minds have been made up in favor of Pacquiao, a fan favorite who had not lost a fight in more than seven years before dropping the WBO welterweight title to Bradley.

It's an opinion that is backed up by the punch totals, which favored the six-division champion throughout the bout.

Aside from attempting to show a certain level of professionalism, having the judges watch the fight again won't accomplish anything. In reality, it's just posturing on the part of the NSAC until the media and fans become bored with the story and allow the storm to pass.

Sooner or later boxing will have to take a deeper dive into why the sport continues to produce controversial decisions and determine a way to get more consistent scoring.

For now, it's just about avoiding a total meltdown.
