NFL Veterans Who Are Fighting for Their Careers in 2012 Training Camps

Aaron NaglerJun 7, 2018

"You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here."

All four of these guys have heard a variation of this sentiment from various NFL teams over the last couple years. While each has found a new team to call home in 2012, there's no question that guys like Randy Moss and Peyton Hillis will be fighting for their NFL lives this summer during training camp.

Moss in particular is an interesting case. He spent all of 2011 away from the game and was markedly nondescript that last time he was on the field in 2010. He burned through three teams in a little under four months in the New England Patriots, Minnesota Vikings and Tennessee Titans.

Initial reports from Niners organized team activities have been glowing—but make no mistake, it's in training camp and preseason games where Moss will be battling to actually make the final roster.

Oh yes—there's every chance Moss doesn't even make it to Lambeau for the 49ers' 2012 season opener. His $1.75 million deal has no guaranteed money attached to it. If head coach Jim Harbaugh doesn't like what he sees from Moss in camp, he can cut the cord without any cap penalties whatsoever.

Joining Moss as veterans who will be fighting for the continuation of their NFL careers is Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Dallas Clark, Kansas City Chiefs running back and former Madden cover-boy Peyton Hillis and Green Bay Packers defensive lineman Phillip Merling

Our senior NFL draft lead writer Matt Miller and I discuss all four of the situations and players in the video above. Let us know if you agree or disagree or who you think should be added to the list in the comments below.
