USA vs. Antigua: America's Qualifier Win Does Not Remove Concerns About Squad

Rob GoldbergJun 4, 2018

The United States national team got a much needed win in its opening World Cup qualifier match, but it is apparent there is still work to do.

This squad is not lacking talent. Veteran Landon Donovan has already been a part of three World Cups. Clint Dempsey finished the EPL season with 17 goals, fourth-most in the league. Young stars Jozy Altidore and Hercules Gomez also could be very good in time.

As a group, however, they have been under-performing.

New head coach Jurgen Klinsmann was brought in to improve upon the mediocrity under Bob Bradley, but so far he has produced mixed results.

The squad defeated Italy 1-0 a few months ago, but the recent friendlies have been more problematic. A 4-1 loss to Brazil might have been excused if not for a scoreless tie against Canada a few days later.

In each game, the United States team created plenty of opportunities, but were unable to come away with goals when it mattered. Even when taking more shots and more corner kicks than Brazil, they were blown out on their home turf.

Last night against Antigua and Barbuda, the players were finally able to get the ball in the back of the net. Unfortunately, this is not one of the better opponents they will face. The Americans should have been able to put up more goals against a lackluster team like this.

The first part of CONCACAF should not provide too much competition for the North American powerhouse. Guatemala and Jamaica are tougher teams than Antigua and Barbuda, but the United States really should not have trouble coming out with wins.

However, this is a good opportunity for the team to work on improving in games that matter. There is a big difference between the attitude during a friendly and a World Cup qualifying game. Everyone will bring their "A" game, so the US needs to as well.

Klinsmann needs to get his team prepared for the tougher teams in the world by dominating these easier opponents. The defense needs to tighten up and the offense needs to get better at finishing.

Until this happens, the United States will never make the jump towards being a real contender in the world of soccer.
