Maria Sharapova Defeats Sara Errani to Win 2012 French Open

Maria Sharapova defeated Sara Errani in straight sets on Saturday morning to win the 2012 French Open title.

She also completed a great personal achievement with her win in Paris. At just 25 years of age, Sharapova has become the 10th player to win the career Grand Slam. This is her first Grand Slam singles title in four years.

Errani had a fabulous tournament, but she was overmatched in the final by a superior opponent in Sharapova.

Sharapova's appearance in the final ensured her of the No. 1 world ranking, and her victory at Roland Garros could be a preview of the Russian star's future success.

Without any dominant players in women's tennis right now, Sharapova has a marvelous opportunity to take over the sport in Grand Slam tournaments. Her play in Paris this year was spectacular, and she lost only one set in the entire tournament.

Sharapova will almost certainly go to Wimbledon in London as the favorite to win the event and her fifth Grand Slam title. She won her first career Grand Slam singles title at Wimbledon in 2004 and lost in the final last year to Petra Kvitova in straight sets.

Sharapova now has three singles titles this season after her French Open win. She previously won the Internazionali BNL d'Italia and Porsche Tennis Grand Prix.

If Sharapova continues to play at this level, she could definitely win Wimbledon and the US Open to finish the summer in style.
