SEC Football Top 150 Players: No. 82, La'Rod King, Kentucky WR
The SEC Blog will be counting down the top 150 players in the SEC every day, concluding on Aug. 30, at the start of the college football regular season.
82. La'Rod King, No. 16, Kentucky Wide Receiver
2011 stats: 40 catches for 598 yards and seven touchdowns
Strengths
King has established himself as the top receiving threat on an otherwise anonymous Kentucky offense. He has 76 catches and 12 touchdowns over the last two years. At 6'4", 194 lbs, King has the size to go up over opposing defensive backs and provides a good target for opposing quarterbacks.
Weaknesses
King isn't in the kind of offense that will make him a star. Kentucky finished last in the SEC with an average of 135.58 yards per game through the air. Max Smith and Morgan Newton will battle for the starting quarterback job this summer after Newton sat out this spring. That will hurt King, who needs to develop chemistry with whomever emerges as the top Kentucky signal-caller.
2012 Prediction
In baseball, players often "play to their numbers," and I expect King to do the same. He's a 500 to 600 yards per season kind of receiver, and that's where he will end up again in 2012. The problem for Kentucky is that nobody else has stepped up to join him as a viable weapon. If someone can, then King's season outlook will improve.
