Cleveland Fans: Time To Go Philadelphia

Rich PrimoFeb 8, 2009

The Cleveland Cavaliers have just been defeated by the Los Angeles Lakers for their first home loss of the season. Lamar Odom disconnected his oxygen tank and his colostomy bag and had something like 73 points and 59 rebounds.

This is a game Cleveland needed to win, as the loss would be the tie-breaker to determine home court advantage should the two teams meet in the Finals and have identical records.

Yes, I understand that the odds of that are remote and that the loss is not that big—but this is national television and a chance to knock off an ESPN darling! I wanted a win!

But, of course, we did not get one. If you need something from a Cleveland pro franchise, you are bound to walk away disappointed.

Call it the frustration of being nearly 41-years-old and having yet to ever see a Cleveland team win a championship that I overreact this way, but it gets to be ridiculous after a while. Cleveland fans look like the groom left at the altar. And ever hopeful, we wait still, scanning the horizon for any sign of our bride.

Cleveland fans deserve better. They care about their teams, sometimes maybe too much. They air their frustrations. They boo the teams when they are playing bad. They fill sports radio with rants, and calling for the head of those they feel are responsible.

Still, all the other teams' fans see is the groom at the altar. "We'll get 'em next year."

It is as humiliating as the losing and it is time we do it no more!

Come on, Cleveland fans—it's time. It's time to go Philadelphia.

Before the Phillies won the World Series in 2008, Philly fans were notorious for melting down because they had not won a championship since 1983! 1983?! I have BACKHAIR from 1983!!!

How in the world do three sports teams in the same city all go without a championship in 45 years?

I guess it would only be fair to point out that the Cavs have only been trying since 1970. Their 40th anniversary would not be until 2010—the year LeBron James becomes a free agent.

Philly fans, you had your day, but you have a World Series Trophy now, and honestly, in comparison, we had a right to be more angry than you even before that.

It's our turn!

We will be the fans who go to NFL Draft Day and boo our first-round pick! We will be the fans who throw snowballs at Santa Claus! Maybe there is something to be said about the rabid fans of a suffering sports city. If these lousy franchises cannot think of a way to bring us a championship trophy, then maybe we can will them to!

Come on, Cleveland fans! Be the fans that people in other cities make fun of (even if it's never to their face.)

They are making fun of you anyway! May as well make them want to cross the street when they see you rather than snicker the way they do now!

I don't care which team it is. It's time we start shoving these guys in the right direction. Let's make them afraid to come out of their houses until they bring us a trophy!

Go crazy at Browns games if they lose the coin toss! Go to Indians games and boo the organ player! Go to Cavs games and throw chalupa wrappers on the court every time they fail to score 100 points!

What, do you want to be like Cubs fans—a Cubbie, a Lovable Loser? Yet, Chicago Fan has six NBA Title trophies from the 1990s and a Super Bowl Ring from the 1980s.

What, do you want to be like Lions Fan, who had their team have an NFL-first 0-16 season? Yet, Detroit fans saw the Pistons win four NBA Titles and the Tigers win two World Series championships since any Cleveland team last won anything. And don't forget that their hockey team is the NY Yankees of the NHL!

Cleveland fans! It is time we took this no more! We are going off the radar, off the reservation, going rogue. It's not like we have jobs holding us back! Let's go!

Let's take the title of Lunatic Fans away from Philadelphia and bring it to Northeast Ohio where it truly belongs!
