Belmont Stakes 2012: I'll Have Another's Place in History Won't Be Forgotten

Nicholas GossJun 8, 2012

I'll Have Another won't be chasing the triple crown at the Belmont Stakes on Saturday because of a tendon injury, one that will force the remarkable horse to retire, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

Trainer says I'll Have Another will retire from racing, effective immediately, due to an injured tendon #BelmontStakes

Even though I'll Have Another won't be able to compete at the Belmont and give horse racing its first triple crown triumph in 38 years, the horse's place in history won't be forgotten.

He has given sports fans several memories we won't soon forget. His Kentucky Derby win over Bodemeister in the final moments of the race at Churchill Downs was one of the most exciting finishes in sports this year.

His win over Bodemeister at the Preakness Stakes happened in almost the same fashion, as I'll Have Another was able to find enough speed to barely edge past Bob Baffter's horse at Pimlico.

Those two wins were unbelievable, and they helped horse racing become a fixture of American sports for several weeks.

The sport was able to receive a lot of positive attention and praise for the excitement over the first two legs of the triple crown, and this will only help horse racing going forward.

It's unfortunate that I'll Have Another's career and triple crown journey had to end this way. You never want to see an injury prevent a horse from having the chance to win the triple crown.

Even though this story has a sad ending, I'll Have Another will always be remembered as an amazing horse that captivated sports fans with his amazing endurance and ability to win races even when he fell behind early.

I'll Have Another will also be remembered as one of the better horses we have seen in some time.
