French Open 2012 Results: Most Impressive Performance in Semifinals

Daniel O'BrienJun 7, 2018

With the 2012 French Open nearing its climax, the player who turned in the most impressive performance in the semifinals was the clay master himself, Rafael Nadal.

Nadal dismantled fellow Spaniard David Ferrer in straight sets, moving one step closer to his seventh title at Roland Garros.

Ferrer, who played exceptional tennis throughout the tournament, didn't have a chance against Rafa, who displayed unrelenting energy and a lethal forehand. Nadal's combination of skills and stamina helped him outlast Ferrer in most rallies, even when Ferrer was at his best.

At the net, Nadal was about as flawless as it gets. He was a perfect 13 for 13 on net approaches and put almost every shot where he wanted to.

His serve didn't blow Ferrer away, but it controlled the match. Rafa's first-serve winning percentage was 85 percent, and he only gave Ferrer two break-point chances.

Meanwhile, Ferrer was having trouble holding his serve against Nadal. Rafa converted seven break points throughout the afternoon, which is what led to such a lopsided match.

The first set ultimately dictated the outcome of the contest, as Nadal withstood some of Ferrer's best rally shots and persevered through eight unforced errors to win the set 6-2. After that, it was smooth sailing in the three-set sweep.

Nadal hasn't lost a set or even faced a set point from an opponent yet in this tournament. He's exceeding even his own French Open standards heading into the finals. His semifinal spectacle against Ferrer was just another step in his championship march.

Novak Djokovic will be a formidable opponent for Rafa in the title match, but if Nadal keeps playing at his current level, there's no one who can top him.
