Notre Dame Football: Possible Future Yankee Stadium Matchup Great for Recruiting

Michael FelderJun 8, 2012

According to the Chicago Tribune, the Fighting Irish and Black Knights of Army are looking to pick up where they left off in 2010, playing a little football in Yankees Stadium.

The game, being worked out for 2013, is a great chance for the Army football team to get a big game on the national stage to help promote the program. For head coach Rich Ellerson, this would help put the program on the big stage and show some of the progress he's been able to engineer at West Point.

However, the big winner here would be Notre Dame. Brian Kelly and the Fighting Irish have been taking strides to increase their profile in a number of ways and a game at Yankees Stadium would most certainly do that.

This year, the Irish are taking on Miami in Chicago, a place where they have a large fanbase, in a game that will be broadcast to millions as a four-hour advertisement for Notre Dame football on the big stage.

In getting the Army game, the Irish would be winning on a couple of levels. Extending a hand of goodwill to the service academies is a positive nationally, a trip to Yankees Stadium will elevate their profile for a week and then there are the all-important recruiting purposes.

By heading to New York, the Irish will get a free trip into the region to flood the marketplace. Since there is no "school of choice" for the football players from New Jersey through New York, Notre Dame gets a shot to make inroads in an area that benefits their recruiting model. If the game gets signed this year, that is a selling point to the already solid class of 2013.

Brian Kelly understands what he is doing with Notre Dame football. He is already getting defensive recruits that he needs to bolster that side of the football. He has some elite players on the offensive side of the ball. He has taken his team to New York once, he's been to Washington DC and he is set up to play in Chicago.

If he can add this New York trip, it will be another opportunity to put an impression on the minds of the young men who will help him keep his job and be successful.
