SEC Football Top 150 Players: No. 83, Tevin Mitchel, Arkansas DB
The SEC Blog will be counting down the top 150 players in the SEC every day, concluding on Aug. 30, at the start of the college football regular season.
83. Tevin Mitchel, No. 8, Arkansas Defensive Back
2011 stats: 56 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, one fumble recovery
Strengths
Mitchel was one of the few bright spots on an otherwise anonymous Arkansas defense last season. As a true freshman, he tallied 56 tackles and established himself as one of the leaders of the Arkansas secondary. He's a solid cover cornerback that isn't afraid to stick his nose in and help out on the run.
Weaknesses
Part of the responsibility of any cornerback is to make interceptions, but Mitchel didn't make a dent in that column on the stat sheet during his freshman campaign. If he wants to take that next step and become a star in the SEC, he's going to have to start forcing some turnovers.
2012 Prediction
This is the season that Mitchel becomes a star. Arkansas hired Paul Haynes to replace Willy Robinson as defensive coordinator, which is an upgrade in and of itself. That's particularly important for the secondary, which is a unit that Haynes has coached throughout his career.
