French Open Scores 2012: Roger Federer Will End Novak Djokovic's Grand Slam Run
Novak Djokovic is on the verge of history, but with the greatest tennis player of all-time on the other side of the net, the Serbian will fall short in his quest for the "Novak Slam."
With a win at the 2012 French Open, Djokovic would hold all four Grand Slam titles at the same time—a feat that Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have never accomplished. Unfortunately for Djokovic, he's facing an insurmountable task at Roland Garros.
After back-to-back exhausting five-set matches, Djokovic will be weary in Friday's semifinals.
In the fourth round, Djokovic stumbled out of the gate, losing the first two sets to No. 22 Andreas Seppi. He recovered to win the next three, but his fatigue carried over to the quarterfinals, where he had to save four match points to beat No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-1, 5-7, 5-7, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1.
It was a valiant and admirable effort by Djokovic, but those consecutive five-set matches will ultimately be his doom.
With Federer waiting in the semis, Djokovic picked the wrong time to get locked into lengthy battles against inferior players. Federer (despite his own five-set match in the quarters) will be more rested, and given his determination to prevent the Novak Slam, the legend will bring his best effort on Friday.
Djokovic has beaten the Swiss maestro in their last two matches, but Federer was victorious in their last battle at Roland Garros. Just one year ago, Federer outlasted Djokovic in an instant classic, winning 7-6(5), 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(5).
With that victory fresh in his mind, Federer should be feeling confident on Friday. He will also be more loose than Djokovic, as the Serbian is the one with all the pressure on his shoulders. He's the one trying to make history, not Federer. And as the match goes on, the pressure will continue to mount on Djokovic, before he eventually collapses.
Don't get me wrong—I'm not trying to insinuate that Djokovic is weak. However, with the fatigue of consecutive matches and the thought of the Novak Slam weighing him down, I don't think he'll be coming into the semifinals with a clear head.
I'm expecting Federer to jump out to an early advantage and slam the door before Djoker can recover.
Final Prediction: Federer in five sets
