Maria Sharapova: Russian Star Will End Sara Errani's Run in French Open Final
Maria Sharapova has dropped just one set en route to the French Open final, and that number isn't likely to increase when she meets No. 21 Sara Errani on June 9.
The Russian sensation hasn't had trouble with any of her opponents, and will not be denied in her quest for her first French Open title and her completion of the career Grand Slam.
Sharapova ensured her spot as the No. 1 ranked player in the world with her semifinal victory over No. 4 Petra Kvitova in convincing fashion, 6-3, 6-3.
This isn't her first time in a Grand Slam final, so we can dispel the notion that the pressure will get to her. Errani will be the one who has to keep her composure and figure out how to deal with the international stage she's been thrust onto upon her semifinal victory over No. 6 Samantha Stosur.
Although Sharapova has lost her last two Grand Slam finals—at Wimbledon and the Australian Open in 2011 and 2012, respectively—she lost to much better competition than Errani is.
Errani is no Kvitova (Sharapova's opponent at Wimbledon), and she's certainly not Victoria Azarenka (Sharapova's opponent at the Australian Open).
Sharapova is going to get a bit of help from the tennis gods on Saturday.
The weather is supposed to be crystal clear, projected at 69 degrees and sunny. That's going to help Sharapova a lot in terms of the power she generates behind her serves and other attempts.
If she's able to serve well, Errani is going to have no chance of getting a lead early, or even making a comeback if she falls behind.
Control and composure will play a huge role in the result of this match.
Sharapova needs to be on her game in terms of where she's hitting the ball. She also needs to control the match by not staying too far away from the net. She needs to play a bit closer than usual against Errani because of her quickness and ability to return most anything, but a perfect shot.
She needs to keep her composure no matter what happens at the beginning of the match.
Errani is a scrappy player, and is going to do plenty of things that frustrate Sharapova. Nothing unsportsmanlike, but it's always frustrating to see a player hit a shot back to you that you didn't expect them to get anywhere near.
Sharapova has a huge advantage over Errani when it comes to her mindset going in and her overall skill set. Not to mention that she played like a woman possessed in her early matches in the tournament.
It's obvious that Sharapova isn't going to be forced to wait another year to complete her career Grand Slam, and Errani is going to suffer the consequences this Saturday at Roland Garros.
