Celtic 2 - Queen’s Park 1 (Scottish FA Cup, February 7, 2009) Headers from Gary Caldwell and Scott McDonald gave the Celtic a 2-goal advantage at halftime. Albacete 0 - Xerez 2 (Segunda Division, February 7, 2009) The highlights included footage of the home crowd protesting against their management as well as footage of a barrier collapsing under the weight of the Xerez supporters.

Catania 1 - Juventus 2 (Serie A, February 8, 2009) Vincenzo Iaquinta kept up his recent goalscoring exploits by heading Juve into an early lead at Catania. Iaquinta then shot the Bianconeri in the foot by getting sent off after 20 minutes. Catania’s numerical advantage finally paid off in the second half when Mascara’s header was only palmed into Takayuki Morimoto’s path, who scored. With the game looking destined to end in stalemate, Ranieri brought on the defensive Christian Poulsen, who found himself the unlikely hero scoring an injury time winner after Terlizzi had an air-shot in the box.

Fiorentina 1 - Lazio 0 (Serie A, February 8, 2009) Mauro Zarate was desperately unlucky not to give Lazio an early lead over Fiorentina as his free-kick hit the inside of the post and stayed out. Sebastien Frey was then needed to save another Zarate effort before Lazio’s De Silvestri was sent off for a second yellow in the 18th minute. The Viola eventually made their extra numbers count as Alberto Gilardino found an 89th minute winner.

Roma 3 - Genoa 0 (Serie A, February 8, 2009) Roma broke the deadlock with a sublime team goal that saw them carve through the visitor’s defence with Cicinho getting the final touch. Vitesse Arnhem 4 - Ajax 1 (Eredivisie, February 8, 2009) Lasse Nilsson opened for Vitesse after 7 minutes with the Ajax defence hopelessly all at sea. Van Basten’s boys equalised on the quarter hour mark through Luis Suarez. But the game just before the break, Dalibor Stevanovic restored Vitesse’s advantage with a lovely curler and Lasse Nilsson’s slid in to add the third on the halftime whistle. Ricky van Wolfswinkel completed the Ajax demolition with a fourth in the 68th minute after more useless defending for the visitors. Can van Basten hold onto his job?
