Belmont Stakes 2012 Odds: Why Dullahan Is Worth Gambling on
If you're the gambling type, you should probably throw some money on Dullahan at the 2012 Belmont Stakes.
The Dale Romans-trained horse has been very strong lately, winning the Blue Grass Stakes in April and finishing third in the Kentucky Derby on May 5. After skipping the Preakness, he should also be well-rested for Saturday's grueling 1.5 mile test in Elmont, New York.
Dullahan is currently sitting at 5-1 odds for the race (according to FOXsports.com), which should be quite tempting for bettors. After sticking with Bodemeister and I'll Have Another for most of the Derby, Dullahan has proven that he can hang with elite competition.
The horse has also been stomping his warmup runs under new jockey Javier Castellano. On Sunday, the pair blazed through four furlongs in 45.97 seconds. If they can maintain that pace on Saturday, they will ruin I'll Have Another and Mario Gutierrez's Triple Crown bid.
Dullahan also got a little luck by drawing post five. Since 1970, six horses have won the Belmont after starting in the fifth slot, including Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew in 1977. Only post seven has yielded more Belmont champions in recent history.
Although the stars seem to have aligned for I'll Have Another, and it's always fun to root for the Triple Crown contender, Dullahan is the smart bet this year.
