Roger Federer: Why Fed-Ex Will Be Greatest Ever When He Retires

Dan RenfroJun 7, 2018

Simply put, Roger Federer is the greatest tennis player of all time.

Note, I'm not arguing that Federer is the best. It's much too arbitrary and tough to compare him to players of different eras. What is important, though, is measuring tennis greatness. When it comes to Federer, there simply is no match.

Fed-Ex has some ridiculous statistics, was one of the most dominant players ever and won everything he could've. When added up, Federer's resume is greater than just about anyone else's.

I could spend days gushing over Federer's greatest feats, but I'll just give you a couple of them.

Only five people in the Open Era have won three consecutive Grand Slams. Naturally, Federer has done it. Twice.

Federer has qualified for 23 Grand Slam finals, and he's only lost seven of them. He only lost back-to-back finals once. When Federer made a run at a Grand Slam, you expected him to come out on top.

From the 2004 Australian Open until the 2007 U.S. Open, Federer won 11 out of a possible 16 Grand Slams. He only fell short of the semifinals once in that four year stretch.

To put that in perspective, only two other players in tennis history have won 11 Grand Slams. Federer only needed four years to do it. He's tallied a few other Grand Slams before and after, but that four-year stretch remains one of the greatest feats in sports history.

Finally, Federer's wins put him in a class all alone.

Only three players have won the career Grand Slam in the Open Era. Federer dwarfs Andre Agassi at every event except for the Australian Open. (They've each won five.)

The other player, Rafael Nadal, has won as many French Open titles as Federer has won at Wimbledon. However, Federer has 10 other titles to his name. Nadal only has four.

Pete Sampras has won more Wimbledon titles than Federer. Federer, though, has won two more Australian Open titles, and he has the elusive French Open victory.

And Federer could still add to his totals.

Federer's numbers are ridiculous. His reign of dominance was one of the greatest runs in professional sports. And no one has a great, complete resume like Federer.

Whenever Fed-Ex retires, there's no doubt that he will be the greatest tennis player of all time.
