Belmont Stakes 2012 Odds: Horses That Will Spoil I'll Have Another's Run

Tim DanielsJun 7, 2018

I'll Have Another will be looking to win the first Triple Crown in 34 years at the Belmont Stakes, but there will be 11 other contenders hoping to steal the spotlight on Saturday. It's a talented field, so the dominant colt definitely has his work cut out for him.

Let's take a look at three horses with the best chance of knocking off the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner. For a complete list of other Belmont hopefuls and their key information, visit the race's official site.

Dullahan: 5/1

Dullahan makes his Triple Crown return after skipping the Preakness. He finished third in the Kentucky Derby after an impressive late charge. The only reason he didn't contend for the victory was a lot of early traffic holding him back.

The extra rest should give him an advantage over I'll Have Another. The favorite is racing the most aggressive schedule of his career, so it's impossible to know how he'll respond. On the other hand, Dullahan should be at full strength.

He has a favorable starting position and his jockey, Javier Castellano, is one of the best in the business. It would be a major surprise if he isn't in the mix as they go down the stretch.

Union Rags: 6/1

Another Kentucky Derby horse making a comeback, Union Rags was a major disappointment in the first leg of the Triple Crown. He finished a distant seventh and never seemed like a real threat despite the hype before the race.

That said, his poor performance should be chalked up as a bad outing more than anything else. He has four wins in seven career races and the Derby was his first finish outside of the money. So it seems like he just didn't have his A-game at Churchill Downs.

Following a month-long layoff, he's a strong choice to have a rebound race on Saturday. He'll start from post No. 3, and as long as he avoids any early issues, he should challenge I'll Have Another.

Paynter: 8/1

While Paynter didn't race in either of the first two Triple Crown races, an impressive victory in his last race has caused his stock to skyrocket recently. The win actually occurred at Pimlico Race Course on Preakness day, but happened well before most people tuned in.

Paynter has two wins in four starts along with a second-place finish. He faced off with I'll Have Another in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby a couple months ago, finishing in fourth. I'll Have Another won that race, as well. The Bob Baffert trainee has been improving since then.

The key will be building off the momentum he picked up a couple weeks ago. If Paynter can do that, he's got a good chance to pull off the upset and make I'll Have Another another Triple Crown statistic.
