An indomitable force is before you. Harness it.
Today the news came across my screen that the Dallas Star had finally placed troubled winger Sean "I screwed up" Avery on waivers. This writer was one of the only New Yorkers not sad to see Avery go to the Stars in the offseason. At that moment, Avery was more of a sideshow.
He destroyed chemistry. He made an unstable locker room that much more unstable. And Sather made the right decision to let him walk away for the cash Dallas was handing him.
With that said, if the Rangers do not claim him off the waiver wire, the entire organization should question whether they are actually committed winning.
After anger management counseling, and what may amount to a major injection of humility, Avery may actually be ready to fulfill his potential as a world class power forward and a master agitator. He also could propel the rangers to play with significant snarl.
Imagine for a moment, if you will, Avery playing on a line with Scott Gomez and Markus Naslund. Then imagine the path of wreckage that he would cause and all that glorious space he could create for his linemates.
In conclusion, this may just be the bargain Sather needs to get his team deep into the playoffs. Avery's salary would be split by the Rangers and Dallas. At that price, Avery's upside is well worth the risk.
It's time for Sather to seize the moment.
Carpe Diem!
