French Open 2012 Results: Best and Worst from Today's Matchups
The 2012 French Open is on its final legs as half of the semifinal draw in singles' competition has been decided for both the men and the women. Meanwhile, the semifinals have been decided for both doubles' competitions.
As we've seen through the tournament, there have been some major surprises throughout.
Here's a look at the best and worst from today's matchups.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga Can't Close out Novak Djokovic
1 of 4For all intents and purposes, No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic should be out of the tournament.
Down 2-1 in sets, Djokovic was on the ropes in the fourth set as it went to a tiebreaker. However, the No. 1 seed ultimately prevailed over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
After winning the fourth set, Djokovic had no problem disposing of Tsonga in the fifth, 6-1.
For Djokovic, it was a great comeback. Tsong, on the other hand, now has to go back to the drawing board.
To be up on the No. 1 player in the world like he was without being able to close it out has to really hurt.
But, these two players don't take the best and worst of the day.
Those honors go to...
Roger Federer Rebounds from Being Down 2-0
2 of 4Juan Martin del Porto owned Roger Federer in the first two sets, 6-3 and 7-6.
For most of the third set, he handled his business as well, going up 5-4.
However, at that point, del Porto ran out of gas. He ultimately went on to lose the third, fourth and fifth sets to be sent home.
The Argentinian had his chances, but he was clearly at his worst from that point on.
Speaking of the worst...
Roger Federer Telling French Fans to Shut Up
3 of 4A Sports Illustrated article described it eloquently enough, so I won't attempt to do so.
""Federer was uncharacteristically testy during his quarterfinal match against Juan Martin del Potro at the French Open on Tuesday. Of course, it didn’t help that Del Potro was absolutely crushing the ball on his way to winning the first two sets. And late in that second set, Del Potro led 5-4 in the tiebreaker when Federer hit a beautiful slice backhand down the line that riled up the crowd with a combination of “oohs” and “out!” calls. Del Potro got to the ball and bashed a cross-court forehand, and Federer missed a lunging forehand. The Swiss reacted by screaming at the crowd to shut up."
"
What's ironic to me is the fact that Federer is usually a fan favorite at the French Open. In a moment of frustration, however, he wasn't too pleased with the fans in the stands.
Maybe they'll get an apology from him at some point.
Sara Errani Beats a Top-10 Seed
4 of 4Up until the French Open, Sara Errani had never advanced past the third round of a major tournament.
Add in the fact that she was 0-28 all time against top-10 seeds, and Errani has exercised some demons in this tournament.
Although it may not have been pretty at times, Errani found a way to dispose of No. 10 seeded Angelique Kerber 6-3, 7-6 (2).
Next up is the semifinals, where she'll face No. 6-seed Sam Stosur.
