NHL's 22 Wackiest Mascot Moments Caught on Tape

Tom Urtz Jr.Jun 6, 2012

The NHL is full of talented players, passionate fans and wacky mascots. Some of these moments have been caught on tape, and they are completely wacky and wild. Some mascots have fought fans, silly-stringed rival fans and even engaged in some fisticuffs with fellow mascots.

Without further ado, here are some of the wackiest mascot moments caught on tape.

Thunderbug Gets "Thunder Punched"

1 of 22

Thunderbug is the playful mascot of the Tampa Bay Lightning, known for pumping up the crowd and getting a "buzz" going throughout the arena. In this clip, Thunderbug silly-stringed a Boston Bruins fan who was not too pleased.

As a result, Thunderbug was pushed from behind by the burly Bruins fan, and he fell down on the stairs. An usher later escorted the fan from the arena, and the surrounding fans serenaded him with a an opinionated chant.

Quidditch at the Staples Center

2 of 22

There really isn't much to say here. The clip shows some NHL mascots squaring off with members of USC in a game of Quidditch. For you Muggles out there, Quidditch is a game traditionally played on broomsticks on a pitch.

The object of the game is... never mind.

This moment was not only wacky but interesting in a weird way.

Lets Get Ready to Rumble

3 of 22

Hockey players fight on the ice. Hockey fans sometimes fight in the stands. What would this mascot skate be without a good, old fashioned fisticuffs rumble?

I feel bad for the mascot who got thrown to the ground because they all ganged up on it and there was no stopping it. Maybe this "star mascot" should hire Marty McSorely to be his enforcer during the next contest. I hear Wayne Gretzky recommends him, and he is "the Great One"!

Louie Does a Back Flip Before St.Louis Blues Game

4 of 22

Louie is the official mascot of the St. Louis Blues. In a pre-game stunt, Louie performed a back flip at center ice. This moment isn't essentially wacky, but I thought it was pretty cool for a person inside of a mascot costume.

Louie Strikes Back!

5 of 22

Louie makes back-to-back appearances on this slideshow because he is an awesome mascot. I don't want to ruin the awesomeness of Louie's actions, so sit back and grab some popcorn or potato chips if that is your sort of thing.

Thunderbug Defends His Home Turf

6 of 22

Everyone knows that the state of Florida is a popular locale for vacations and spring-breakers. In this video, Thunderbug goes about the beaches and messes with the tourists. This was a pretty wacky experience for some of the beach-goers and tourists, but nobody messes with Thunderbug.

I'm Not Surprised This Mascot Was Rejected by Fruit of the Loom

7 of 22

Are there any words to aptly describe this behavior? The biggest question on my mind is: Was this individual was let in through security?

This mascot was at the Bank Atlantic Center, home of the Florida Panthers, and despite the fanbase being in their home arena, they were chirped and spooked by this knucklehead.

This Mascot Should Stick to Sesame Street

8 of 22

I feel bad for this mascot. The mascot looks like it was plopped out of a Sesame Street skit, outfitted with skates and placed on the ice to amuse the paying crowd.

If you're going to get a mascot for a skit during the intermission of a hockey game, skating should be one of the many prerequisites.

Let's Hope He Was Wearing a Cup

9 of 22

There is only one word to describe the clip above. Ouch!  For the sake of this mascot, I am hoping he was wearing a cup. In the confines of a hockey game, it sucks to hit the post, but this brings a whole new meaning to that concept.

Roasted Duck, Anyone?

10 of 22

No words can really explain what happened during this situation. Wild Wing is almost set on fire, and this scene was really pretty crazy. Things could have been worse, and Wild Wing could have become a roasted duck.

Bailey Takes Wild Wing Tanning

11 of 22

Speaking of roasted duck, this Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks contest featured a little extra hijinks when this video played on the jumbo tron. Bailey, the Los Angeles Kings' ferocious mascot, decided to take the mild-mannered Wild Wing to a tanning result.

Four hours later, Bailey's duck friend was cooked. Was it an accident? I don't think so but how can you not accuse this ferocious lion of such a heinous crime?

Angry Birds on Ice

12 of 22

Louie really is dominating the slideshow, and a huge reason is because of the interactive and wacky promotions the St. Louis Blues run during pre-games and intermissions. Angry Birds is one of the most popular mobile apps, and this clip puts an interesting spin on the mobile sensation.

Iceburgh Defends His Home Turf

13 of 22

This clip goes back to the early 2000s when the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers were engaged in a bitter rivalry. Iceburgh was so enraged with the influx of Flyer fans invading his turf that he tracked one down and chased him all the way back to Philadelphia.

I saw the clip, laughed and asked myself: What happened when Iceburgh turned around and made his way back to Pittsburgh? I have to think that the pesky Penguin had to walk down Broad Street, but I digress.

Out of Town Fans Feel the Wrath of Lou

14 of 22

This slideshow may contain tons of footage of Louie, but who is complaining? I know I'm not. This clip features a group of Chicago Blackhawks fans in the midst of a sea of blue, and then Louie decides to have some fun.

Sabretooth Channels His Inner HBK

15 of 22

For you non-wrestling fans reading this, Shawn Michaels famously entered the arena one night by rappelling from the rafters on a zip-line into the ring. In this clip, Sabretooth descends from the rafters in a Cirque du Soleil-like fashion before taking the ice and unleashing a guttural roar.

Step into the Master's Dojo

16 of 22

Louie has been shown as a heckler, a prankster and a gymnast, and now he is portrayed as a karate master. In this pre-game skit, Louie unleashes his inner zen and engages in some martial-art hijinks.

Louie is really an entertaining mascot and must make the experience in St. Louis truly memorable.

Harvey the Hound Silly-Strings a Fan and Isn't Attacked

17 of 22

Take note, burly Bruin fan: This is how you should react. Harvey the Hound was in good spirits with the Stanley Cup Final going on in Calgary. However, when a Tampa Bay fan caught his eye, he made an example of him in a joking way.

This wacky moment was all in good fun, and no one got hurt.

Fight...Fight...Fight...or Not

18 of 22

These two mascots looked like they wanted to drops the gloves and engage in a battle of fisticuffs after the tons of chirping that preceded this fight. However, once the mascots got together in the concourse, an usher instructed the mascots that they couldn't fight.

No fighting allowed at a hockey game? That is like no singing being allowed at the opera.

Wild Wing Enters from the Rafters

19 of 22

Wild Wing was ready for action this time. The proud Anaheim Ducks mascot had his mask, he had his skates and he had his music. After ascending to the top of the Honda Center, Wild Wing made a grand entrance to a crowd full of fans.

Iceburgh Channels His Inner Mick Jagger

20 of 22

What is funnier than watching a mascot strut like a former prominent rock star and then proceeding to mess with the on-ice crew? Not many things, if you ask me, but then again I don't live the world's most exciting life.

The crowd seemed to enjoy this skit, and I guess that it is the mascot's job to make the on-ice officials look a tad foolish.

Gnash Channels His Inner Acrobat at the Nationwide Arena

21 of 22

Gnash is the Nashville Predators' mascot, and during an intermission at a home game, the energetic and agile mascot put on quite the show. Gnash was doing flips and tricks while on a rope in a Cirque du Soleil-like performance.

It was a fun performance and really brought out an interesting side to the fan interaction of this franchise.

Thriller Takes on a Whole New Meaning.

22 of 22

What is there to say? A flash mob including Harvey the Hound broke out into dance during the intermission of a Calgary Flames game. The individuals involved danced to Michael Jackson's Thriller, yet the fans didn't really know how to react in this situation.
