NBA Rumors: Steve Nash and Suns Would Be Wise to Explore Sign-and-Trade Scenario

Alex KayJun 5, 2018

Steve Nash has been linked to just about every team in the NBA and will be one of the hottest unrestricted free agents on the open market this summer.

Now, according to Steve Kyler of Hoopsworld, it seems that Nash is willing to facilitate a sign-and-trade deal, which would maximize his value, increase the number of eligible suitors and help the organization that he won two MVP awards with get something back in return.

The 38-year-old point guard still has a lot left in the tank and is reportedly seeking a three-year deal to finish out his playing days. He’s accomplished almost everything that one could hope for during a successful NBA career, with the notable exception of winning a championship ring.

That is no doubt going to play a key role in which franchise Nash decides to take his talents to in the offseason.

While there are some rumblings that the Canadian wouldn’t mind staying in Phoenix—due to his loyalty, the team's willingness to give him around $10 million per season and crack medical staff—it appears much more likely that he will make a move to a contender.

The New York Knicks, Miami Heat and Los Angeles Lakers are just a few playoff teams that have expressed interest, in some form or another, in acquiring the services of Nash.

Given the fact that most of these teams are loaded with big contracts and at or over the salary cap, a sign-and-trade might be the only way to reasonably land the superstar point guard without him consenting to a significant pay cut.

Phoenix has to know that it's probably going to lose Nash, one way or another, this offseason and should be happy to get anything of value in return for the unrestricted free agent.

It’s a win-win for all parties, and if Nash decides to defect from the desert, it will likely be via a sign-and-trade.
