French Open 2012 Results: Power Ranking Top Remaining Contenders

Alex KayJun 1, 2018

The “Big Three” of the tennis world—Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer—are still alive at the 2012 French Open.

Obviously, they are going to be the three favorites, in some order, to win it all at Roland Garros.

Let’s power rank their chances to win the Grand Slam tournament.

No. 1: Rafael Nadal

Rafa is the “King of Clay” for a reason. His game is perfectly suited for the slower surface and he has been absolutely dominant on it.

As the No. 2 seed, he is likely to run into Federer in the semifinals and Djokovic in the finals.

Fortunately, his record against those two excellent players is spectacular on clay. Unless he gets injured or is severely off his game, Rafa will win the 2012 French Open.

No. 2: Novak Djokovic

The Djoker isn’t just going to waltz into the finals this year. He’s got a tough impending match with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarterfinals and then likely meets up with Andy Murray in the semis.

He’s the World No. 1 and the No. 1 in the tournament, but he’s likely not the best player.

That honor goes to Nadal and it will be impressive if the young Serb can first get to the finals to face him, and second, actually win.

No. 3: Roger Federer

Federer had, literally, the easiest road to the quarterfinals of any Grand Slam he has ever participated in.

The road gets much tougher now, as he matches up against Juan Martin Del Potro for the right to advance.

The Swiss national is not in his best form right now and hasn’t played perfect tennis against the subpar competition.

There’s a chance he gets knocked out in the QFs, and a huge likelihood that he is gone next round if he does move on.

Federer just doesn’t have what it takes to beat the likes of Nadal on clay or the younger Djokovic in a final at a major.
