French Open 2012: How Top Superstars Are Currently Performing

Chris StephensJun 7, 2018

The 2012 French Open is in the middle of the fourth round, and needless to say, there have been a lot of surprises thus far.

Currently, there are eight seeded women left in play, while there are no unseeded men left in play.

Here's a look at how some of the top players in the draw have fared during the tournament.

No. 1 Novak Djokovic

1 of 8

Men's top seed Novak Djokovic made things interesting in the fourth round, when he fell down 2-0 after the first two sets against Andres Seppi.

But Djokovic recovered, winning the final three sets 6-3, 7-5, 6-3.

Djokovic breezed through the first three rounds of the tournament with relative ease, winning all nine sets he played, only allowing his opponents 23 games in the nine sets.

In the quarterfinals, Djokovic will likely face fifth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who is up 4-2 in the fifth set of his fourth-round match.

No. 1 Victoria Azarenka

2 of 8

The top seed in the women's draw, Victoria Azarenka, is no longer in the tournament.

Azarenka was ousted from the tourney by No. 15 seed Dominika Cibulkova, who beat the top seed 6-2, 7-6 (7-4).

Other than the second round, Azarenka seemed to struggle throughout the tournament.

In the first round, she struggled against Alberta Brianti, losing the first set 7-6 (8-6). However, she rebounded to win the next two sets 6-4, 6-2.

Then, in the third round, Aleksandra Wozniak held her own in both sets before losing 6-4 in both.

No. 2 Rafael Nadal

3 of 8

The two-time defending French Open champion, Rafael Nadal, hasn't lost a set yet at Roland Garros.

He's been dominant in all three matches, only allowing his opponents 17 games in three rounds.

But that all could change in the fourth round, as he'll face No. 13 seed Juan Monaco in the fourth round.

However, given Nadal's history, I don't see any reason why he won't advance to the quarterfinals.

No. 2 Maria Sharapova

4 of 8

When it comes to who has been the most dominant throughout the tournament (men's or women's bracket), women's No. 2 seed Maria Sharapova has shown the most.

In three matches, she's allowed five total games to opponents, with the most being three in one match.

Sharapova looks to have the best shot at the title.

Next up for the No. 2 seed is Voracova Zakopolova.

No. 3 Roger Federer

5 of 8

Third-seeded Roger Federer eliminated the final unseeded men's player in the tournament, winning his fourth-round match over David Goffin 5-7, 7-5, 6-2, 6-4.

Although he encountered a little trouble in the first two sets, Federer settled down and began to dominate in the third set.

Throughout the rest of the tournament, he had a few struggles as well, losing one set in each of the second and third rounds.

He's allowed his opponents wins in 59 games, playing in a total of 149 games through all of his sets.

No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska

6 of 8

The third seed in the tournament, Agnieszka Radwanska, is out of the tournament after her third-round loss to No. 26 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova, who in turn lost in the fourth round.

Radwanska had a little success in the first two rounds, beating Venus Williams in the second round 6-2, 6-3.

No. 4 Andy Murray

7 of 8

Andy Murray had second-round struggles in the tournament, but hasn't really been challenged other than that.

He won his first-round match 6-1, 7-5, 6-0, then lost the first set in the second round before recovering for three straight set wins.

In the third round, he beat Santiago Giraldo 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

The fourth round has 17th-seeded Richard Gasquet.

No. 4 Petra Kvitova

8 of 8

Next to Sharapova, Petra Kvitova is the highest seed left in the tournament.

Kvitova has only allowed one game to get away in the three rounds she's played and has looked strong everywhere else in the tournament.

Next up for Kvitova is Varvara Lepchenko, who has defeated two straight ranked players en route to the fourth round.
