Jacksonville Jaguars: Justin Blackmon's DUI Arrest Should Raise Some Red Flags

Vaughn JohnsonJun 7, 2018

New Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Justin Blackmon already has his name in headlines, but for all of the wrong reasons.

ESPN reported early Sunday morning that Blackmon was arrested for aggravated DUI in Stillwater, OK, the same place where Blackmon made a name for himself on the field at Oklahoma State.

Blackmon, only 22 years of age, is young and will make silly mistakes like this. But this is apparently not his first run-in with the law.

Blackmon was arrested back in 2010 on a misdemeanor DUI charge, according to the ESPN report. Not only was he driving under the influence, he was also speeding—a very dangerous combination.

For the Jaguars organization, this incident should raise a great deal of red flags about your new rookie receiver, for whom you moved up to two spots in the draft to grab. Here is your first-round pick, who was brought in to be a savior of the offense and who should be preparing for his first NFL season, out instead getting arrested for the second time in two years.

And it was for virtually the same offense, showing that Blackmon didn't necessarily learn his lesson from the first incident.

What does this arrest also show? Maybe it shows a feeling of invincibility or entitlement on Blackmon's part. Maybe he thought, because he was in Stillwater, where he was a star and helped Oklahoma State to its best season in school history, that he couldn't and wouldn't get in trouble.

Obviously, he was wrong.

No one knows but Blackmon what was his state of mind as he got behind the wheel inebriated. Right now, Blackmon seems to have a world of talent, but he also seems to be severely lacking in the maturity department.

There is never a good time to get in trouble with the law, but for Blackmon right now, there couldn't be a worse time. He is fresh into a league the commissioner of which, Roger Goodell, is not afraid to come down with a very heavy hand on those who stain the shield of the National Football League. He is especially heavy-handed on those who have a history of getting into trouble.

And Blackmon has such a history.

Hopefully this will be a harsh lesson for Blackmon and helps him grow up quickly, because no matter the talent, a player without a good head on his shoulders will not last very long in the NFL.
