Roger Federer: Who Will Give Fed-Ex the Most Trouble This Year?
After an impressive four rounds so far in Paris, Roger Federer has shown that he is ready to make a promising run.
He has played against some sound opponents this tournament and remained composed under pressure, only dropping three sets in total. His dominant service game and consistent play reminds tennis fans how the game has never seen a player like Federer and that he is almost always in contention for every tournament.
He is still playing well, but he is slowly beginning to go downhill. The rise of newer and younger talent is slowly surpassing him, making him No. 3 in the rankings instead of his usual No. 1.
Even though he has made it this far with relative ease, Federer still has a few obstacles to compete against on his way to a French Open title.
Djokovic has made it clear that he is the No. 1 player in the world. He has won four out of the last five Grand Slams, the French Open being the only one exception. Even though he has shown sporadic signs of vulnerability, no one has really been able to stop Djokovic. If they both continue their dominating performances, the No. 1 and No. 3 seeds are set to meet in the semis. Novak has had Federer's number as of late and do not expect anything to change.
Roland Garros can easily be renamed "Rafael Garros" because of his continued dominance at the tournament. He has won five out of the last six French Opens, and based on his play so far this year, he looks to be well on his way to a seventh. The history between Nadal and Federer has clearly been in the Spainard's favor, and if the two were to meet in the final, look for Rafa to continue his unbeatable clay surface play.
Tomas Berdych
Berdych is the No. 7 player in the world, and like Federer, is a seasoned veteran. He has never won a Grand Slam, but he has been playing much better as of late.
He will be battling Juan Martin del Potro in the fourth round, and the winner of the match will face Federer. Assuming Berdych advances, he will be the toughest opponent Federer has faced. Berdych has proven he can outplay Federer in the past, and should they match up in the quarters, he would have the potential to upset the No. 3 seed.
Tsonga is at his highest ranking and playing some of the best tennis in his career. The heavy-hitting Frenchman cruised into the fourth round, only dropping two sets.
This year's performance is tied with the deepest he has been in the French Open. Assuming he overcomes No. 18 Stanislas Wawrinka, he will face Djokovic, but Tsonga has beaten Djokovic before. Tsonga has not had much luck against Federer in the past, but with the fast start he has had in Paris and the home crowd behind him, his fast-paced style could easily rattle the Swiss.
