Liverpool FC: Dirk Kuyt Joins Fenerbahce as Rodgers Looks to Sign Clint Dempsey

Shubbankar SinghJun 7, 2018

Dirk Kuyt of Liverpool, who was often referred to as the "Duracell bunny" for the Reds, has decided to call it a day at Anfield. He will be moving to Fenerbahce and will now ply his trade under manager Aykut Kocaman.

The move sees the Dutchman sign a three-year deal for the Turkish club side after leaving the Reds, where he spent six years.

The timing of Kuyt's transfer comes in at the moment when Liverpool have appointed a new manager in Brendan Rodgers, who came in from Swansea. The move probably means that Kuyt does not feature in Rodgers' plans or that the Dutchman decided that it would be better for a fresh challenge in Turkey, as he did not get many opportunities under former Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish.

Dalglish often started with his favored expensive signing of Jordan Henderson on the right side of midfield. Even though Henderson failed time and time again to deliver the goods, he was persisted with. This certainly would not have gone down too well with Kuyt, who is in the twilight of his career and does still feel that he has a couple of good years left in him.

New Liverpool manager Rodgers is also looking to shake up things at Anfield and is interested in signing Clint Dempsey, who was adjudged Fulham player of the year for a second year running earlier this year. The interest in Dempsey might also have been a reason for Kuyt's departure.

Dempsey can play as a striker or in midfield and has had quite incredible stats for Fulham for the past four seasons.

Kuyt would want to keep playing regularly at club level to increase his chances of going to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and it is likely that he did not see the same opportunities at Liverpool that might be afforded to him at Fenerbahce in a less competitive league.

The highlights of Dirk Kuyt's time at Liverpool included a brace against crosstown rivals Everton, a hat trick against fierce rivals Manchester United at Anfield and a vital goal at Wembley that helped Liverpool lift the Carling Cup this year.

Kuyt contributed a lot of vital goals to Liverpool's success and his work rate will surely be missed by the KOP.
