French Open 2012 Schedule: How Tomorrow's Draw Will Shake out
After an eventful seventh day of tennis at Roland Garros, it's time to shift focus to the key matches that will take place in the French Open's eighth day. Some of the biggest names in tennis have been eliminated already, will tomorrow lead to the demise of some more big names?
Here's how some of tomorrow's slate of games will shake out.
Novak Djokovic Moves One Step Closer to Nadal Final
At this point, it's pretty clear that Rafael Nadal is operating on a whole other level in comparison to the rest of the field. Nadal's dominance on clay has been a huge story and he has lived up to the hype in the first three rounds of the tournament.
What hasn't received as much attention is the fact that the No. 1 player in the world—Djokovic—has also rolled through the competition through the first three rounds and has yet to lose a set. Djoker will have a tough time beating Nadal, but he does stand the best chance at giving Nadal a tough time.
Fans of great tennis should be pleased to see Djokovic blow through his matchup with Andreas Seppi. Seppi is the 22nd-ranked player in the world, but Djokovic has been playing well and there's a reason he is No. 1 in the world. He should advance easily.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga Advances Over Stanislas Wawrinka
With the winner most likely meeting Djokovic in the next round, this matchup might not have a whole lot of bearing on the overall picture in this tournament, but it should be a great match. Ranked fifth and 18th overall respectively, these two are among the most evenly matched opponents of the day.
Expect these two to match up well with each other and put on a great match, but in the end, Tsonga will have more in the tank. Wawrinka has had to battle to get this far and is coming off of a grueling match with Gilles Simon. Wawrinka was able to pull that one out, but Tsonga is just good enough to win a close one.
Victoria Azarenka Won't Fall Victim to the Upset Bug
Switching over to the women's bracket, No. 1 ranked Victoria Azarenka headlines tomorrow's slate of games in a matchup against 15th-ranked Dominika Cibulkova.
The women's side has been marked with upsets of big-name contenders such as Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki, but don't expect Azarenka to join that crowd—she's been playing some great tennis. Azarenka has dominated thus far in the tournament and hasn't even been in danger of losing a set.
Cibulkova has been equally impressive, so it should be a tightly contested match, but Azarenka will be the one to advance to the next round.
Juan Martin del Potro "Upsets" Tomas Berdych
When Del Potro and Berdych square off, it will be the closest matchup of the day on paper. As two players ranked in the top 10 and looking to secure spots in the next round, we can expect to see good tennis from both of these players.
However, Del Potro does come into this match with a small advantage in terms of momentum. Much like the Tsonga vs. Wawrinka matchup, this one could come down to a battle of attrition. With Berdych coming off of a tough match against Kevin Anderson, Del Potro could have the advantage.
Look for Del Potro to ride the momentum of defeating Marin Cilic in straight sets to a win over Berdych.
