Novak Djokovic: Easy Road Suggests Djoker Will Cruise to French Open Final

Eric BallJun 1, 2012

The No. 1 ranked player in the world’s path to the French Open Finals is a rather easy one…which is what happens when you win three consecutive Grand Slam titles.

He earned this.

Novak Djokovic doesn’t have to face “King of Clay” Rafael Nadal until the finals, and the competition in front of him is not exactly daunting.

No. 4 ranked Andy Murray, who has clearly established himself as the top player outside of the big three, is dealing with an incredibly painful back injury that almost forced him to retire in his second round win over Jarkko Nieminen. He lost the first set 6-1, and looked like a dead duck before rebounding to take the next three sets rather easily.

He looks to be ripe for an upset in the next two rounds. Federer is cruisng, but can’t seem to crack the Djoker puzzle and would be pulling one of the bigger upsets in recent history if he were to upset Djokovic in the semis.

As for Djokovic, the only person that can beat him at this point is himself in the next few rounds. He hasn’t dropped a set in his first two matches despite committing 34 unforced errors in the second round. This comes after Djoker had 41 unforced errors in the Rome Masters against Nadal.

If he can adjust to ensure he plays a tad less sloppy, he will be steamrolling through the likes of Nicolas Devilder, No. 22 Andreas Seppi and No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the projected matchups he will be facing in the next three rounds.

Tsonga has a strong game at times, but was the victim of a rain delay in the second round which forced him to finish his match the next day. With the tight schedule, that means he’ll have to play two days in a row. In a tournament that is about endurance more than any particular skill, this is a death sentence.

If Djokovic is able to minimize his unforced errors, it is a very conceivable scenario where he walks into the semifinals without dropping a single set.

That is not what the rest of the field wants to hear.
