Michael Phelps: Fair or Unfair

Kyle Strittholt@Man0fSteel94Correspondent IFebruary 6, 2009

There are a lot of different opinions about the photo of Michael Phelps smoking weed. Some people think that the government should stay out of celebrities lives, and what they do in their personal time is their problem.

Others think it’s a very poor image on athletes and stars in general and that they should lead a better example for young people.

The truth is we expect to much from stars, athletes, and all famous people. Just because we see these people on TV doesn’t mean they’re different from us. They breathe the same air we breathe, but they got money so they can party more than us.

It shouldn’t be a surprise when people a person, like Phelps, gets in trouble for something like this. We would like to think that people like Phelps would not do things like this, but it’s just not the way things are.

Michael Phelps was the first person to win eight gold medals at the Olympics. That’s a great achievement for this country and for him. This should not affect the amount of trouble he gets in though. Three months suspension is just too short. He deserves at least six months, and all athletes need to take a drug test more often.

In the Olympics Phelps did not only represent a team, he represented our country. What does this say about Americans? We should crack down on athletes just as hard as we do citizens of this country.

On the side of Phelps, how stupid can you be? He lost endorsement deals; he’s currently banned from competitive swimming, and for what; to have a good time for about three hours? He must have been smoking for a while to get that stupid.

I agree that there are worse crimes out there than smoking weed, but it’s the law and should be followed. Maybe the next time Phelps decides to smoke weed, or do anything else illegal; he won’t do it in front of a camera. All in all, the punishment he received is fair, and I think Phelps is lucky that it wasn’t worse.
